Abstract
Data modelling techniques for the design of buildings are increasing in popularity all over the world and are fast becoming the norm for large projects. This White Paper from Data Design
System explains the significance of Industrial Foundation Classes (IFCs) in modelling and their role in the Building Smart approach. It also addresses the specific benefits of IFCs for
building services engineers and charts the way forward.
IFCs are fast becoming the de-facto standard for exchanging rich data between construction design disciplines, and improved flow of information through to facilities management
operations. Using IFC data modeling, building services engineers are able to participate in model based design, collaborating with other disciplines using IFC file based team working, or
by using an advanced IFC model server environment.
IFC based collaborative design is the smart way to design buildings, and is being used on many projects worldwide to improve interoperability, reduce costs and improve design quality.
